Marriage from the perspective of economics and sociology with regard to mate selection
Konrádová, Kateřina ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Vohlídalová, Marta (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of marriage, or more specifically, on the process of its formation or, in other words, mate selection. The author compares economic (G. S. Becker) and sociological (V. K. Oppenheimer) theory of the marriage market, including assortative mating. The subject of the work is to compare economic and sociological view of the issue of mate selection in an aim to discover common and different elements in the two scientific disciplines as regards the matter. The author works with four comparison criteria. The first one gives a general overview of the marriage market and describes how it functions, the second one shows the relationship between the marriage and job markets, the third is about assortative mating and the fourth one describes and explains changes in marriage behaviour in the second half of the twentieth century. Based on this, the author deems the sociological approach to be more adequate and suitable for investigating such a complex process as mate selection.
The Economy of Marriage in the Czech Republic
Břízová, Lucie ; Ryvolová, Ivana (advisor) ; Chalupníček, Pavel (referee)
The goal of my work is to explain the recent trends in the development of the economy of marriage in the Czech Republic. One of the inseparable parts of my investigation of reproductive decision making using the cost-benefit analysis is the comparison of Gary Becker's economy of marriage, i.e. of the application of Chicago School's theory of consumer demand at the given problematics, with the Pennsylvanian theory of relative income. This comparison is to be done in the conditions of the Czech Republic. Another part of my analysis is formed by the investigation of the much discussed view of children as long-term consumer goods or capital goods. Confronting Chicago School's theory of fertility with its critics is very important. The sub-goal of my work is to prove the connection between marriage rate, birthrate, and economic cycles and also the connection between economic growth and population growth in the Czech Republic. I also concentrate at the change of the trends in reproductive decision making which occurred in the Czech Republic after the fall of communism. Another chapter is devoted to marriage markets and their connection with job markets. The last part of my work concentrates at the effects of pro-natalist politics in the Czech Republic, possibilities of regulating population, and the effectiveness of population politics. At the end of my work I am going to use all my findings to try to answer the question whether it is or is not possible to use the economy of marriage to explain the development trends in the Czech Republic and if necessary I am also going to try to find all the aspects causing deviations from the economic theory.
Economics of marriage compared with approach of sociology
Ventová, Kateřina ; Brožová, Dagmar (advisor) ; Janíčko, Martin (referee)
The main goal of this bachelor thesis is a comparison of an economic and a sociological approach to a marriage and a family. The thesis is focused on the methodology and then it deals with the three parts of family life -- entry to marriage, establishing of the family and break-up of marriage. The thesis is trying to find conflicts and agreements between the methods and the conlusions of both sciences. The economic approach to the marriage and the family is represented mainly by the American economist Gary S. Becker. The empirical part of the thesis is focused on the verification of the hypotheses explaining the changes in the marrital and family behaviour. These hypotheses are verified on the data which are related to the population living on the area of the Czech Republic.
